Accessible designer

February 26, 2016

Designer Tommy Hilfiger has finally introduced accessible clothing for children with disabilities. About damn time. Hopefully this will open more eyes in the clothing industry for even more products for people of all ages.

He joined forces with a non-profit organization called Runway of Dreams to produce shirts, pants and dresses that feature magnetic and velcro closures and adjustable sleeves. This is simply a brilliant idea and I know a lot of people who would greatly benefit from wearing them.

I'm absolutely thrilled that they finally devised more appropriate clothing for kids that have physical impairments and can wear the same cool clothes like everyone else at school. It doesn't matter if they have shortened limbs, wear leg braces or use a wheelchair, the shirts and pants can be adapted to suit their needs.

The beauty of this is that these kids can feel less self aware of their physical disabilities and be more independent. Giving them a fair platform when it comes to fashion is a huge boost towards their self esteem and confidence. I sincerely hope that more companies follow suit and be more creative like this in the near future.

A new hero

February 18, 2016

I know that I've mentioned this many times before but I will say it again: people with disabilities have the right to request a more accessible platform at school, work, sports, as well as services such as restaurants and theatres. They have every right to speak up about what services are creating a barrier that is preventing them from being included like everyone else. There cannot be any form of discrimination towards people with a disability. There is a law in place that helps enforce more...

What did you say?

January 19, 2016
I recently came across an article that reminded me of the importance of staying true to our heart. Following our dreams is more important than listening to someone trying to destroy it. Just because we have a hearing loss doesn't mean that we can't try.

For some reason, people seem to think that it's okay to offer unsolicited advice on my life. I've heard it all. Ironically. Don't get me wrong, some of those individuals genuinely thought that they were doing a good thing but in reality, it wa...

My life on pause

January 16, 2016

I've spent the last few months taking a break from sports to recover from numerous injuries that didn't seem to be healing. I took that opportunity to concentrate on the creative side in my life which I have not done in a very long time. This was something that I neglected to do for my myself which is what I was desperately craving. I needed those quiet moments of sketching, doing nature photography and writing. I'm a creative person, I always have been. Sports provided a much needed outlet f...

Lessons in life

January 12, 2016

After wearing hearing aids for over 40 years, I've learned a lot. I'm fully aware of my limitations and what works for me. It's not necessarily because I'm stubborn, it's due to the fact that I have oodles of experience. I know when someone is trying to pull a fast con on me or trying ridiculously hard to convince me that a particular brand is more superior than others. I can spot someone who is not qualified or inexperienced with dealing with someone with a hearing loss. Not very many things...

Serendipity

January 1, 2016
Everything happens for a reason. Throughout our lives, pieces of a random puzzle seems to fall into our path, sometimes it may take months or a year or two that we begin to see the full picture. In my case, it wasn't until recently that my love for 80's music from high school came full circle.

When I had written my first novel, Sway, the main character Jessie had a different name, it was originally Jenna. I had picked that name since it was one I was going to use if I had a baby girl (If it w...

Fencing with Deaf Athletes

December 17, 2015

I’ve been asked if I’ve found the transition of going deaf from a profound hearing loss easier than becoming hearing impaired later in life from a normal hearing. Honestly? I really can’t answer that question because I was born with a severe to profound hearing loss. I have no idea what normal hearing sounds like. It was only in recent years that I went deaf in one ear from being exposed to toxic antibiotics.

However, what I can say is that growing up with a severe hearing loss has had ...

Love from Nikki And Ian!

November 12, 2015

Wow! Just got a great surprise from one of my fellow authors at Black Opal Books who's book cover I designed - Nikki Reed from Sleepy Hollow and husband Ian Somerhalder shared their love for Tonya Royston's latest release of Shadows at Sunset on Twitter! I was blown away by their support for Tonya. Congrats!

Earlier this year, Tonya and her sister were lucky enough to meet Ian and Nikki at a charity event for the Ian Somerhalder Foundation. They had a fabulous time chatting with the two stars...

That Deaf Guy

October 31, 2015

I recently stumbled across a superb comic created by Matt and Kay Daigle, an incredibly talented artist who has incorporated aspects of their life as a deaf person. It not only illustrates what it's like to be deaf but it also includes everyone else's perspective and experiences. They also feature sign language which is very well done. It's simply brilliant!

When I started reading them, I couldn't believe how similar they were to my own experiences. This was a wonderful gift to me since it ma...

Safe Travels

August 6, 2015

Growing up with a severe hearing loss has taught me a lot of life lessons. I’ve learned that the only person responsible for my safety, especially while traveling, is myself. Even though there are kind and considerate people out there who are more than happy to help me, I simply cannot rely on them for their guidance around the clock.

It doesn’t matter if it’s riding on the subway, bus, taxi, the train or plane, I’ve realized that it’s necessary to plan ahead and be extremely dilige...
