Open Book

June 3, 2016

My life is like an open book, literally. I’ve written and published a trio of young adult novels, featuring a teen girl with a profound hearing loss. When I intially wrote “Sway”, the first book in the series, I wasn’t entirely sure what kind of reception I would receive. Imagine my surprise when it hit the TOP 50 best seller list at Kobobooks.com. I was astounded and that’s when I knew that I was on the right track. After that, I wrote two more books, “Compass” and “Destiny”.  All of them have received numerous awards and glowing testimonials. Due to the resounding feedback and requests from fans around the world, I decided to write a fourth novel entitled “Home” which will be released later this year.

I’m often asked why I chose to write about a hard of hearing teenager. A few years ago, I was at a crossroads, trying to decide what to do in terms of a career. I’ve been a public speaker, an award-winning photographer, illustrator and book cover designer. At the time, I was struggling to find a job and wanted to find a way to make a valuable contribution to the society. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that there needed to be a change in the stigma surrounding hearing loss. Typically, when I meet someone for the first time, they’re often surprised that I wear hearing aids and that always bothered me. I wanted to find a way to bring in more awareness about hearing loss and it just made perfect sense to write a book about it.

Even though it’s not an autobiography, it’s a fictional story where I’ve incorporated true aspects of my life. There are many segments in all of the books that feature real scenes. It worked out very well since it created intense emotions and a deeper connection due to the actual experiences. As a result, it’s filled with a mix of endearing and heart-wrenching moments. One minute, you’ll be laughing, then the next, you will be reaching for tissues and sobbing. I’ve had many people tell me that that they became more enlightened after reading my books.

My goal was to show young adults that they didn’t have to feel alone. I wanted to give them a sense of hope. Truthfully, I wish that I had these books when I was a teen. It would’ve given me a boost in my self confidence.

My childhood was not easy. Even though I wore hearing aids, they were not as sophisticated as today’s digital models. I missed a lot. I had a hard time hearing people, understanding social cues and being able to follow conversations. It didn’t help that I was a painfully shy kid. People were often quick to assume that I was stupid or wouldn’t let me participate in the same activities as everyone else. I was often teased and shunned at school. Not only did it terrify me, it left me with the impression that I wasn’t accepted or worthy of anyone’s respect or love.

You see, what I went through in life defined me. Through heartache and chaos, I had to discover my true purpose. It taught me an important lesson in believing myself and staying strong. That’s what my books are about, finding the strength to rise above the challenges and holding onto hope.

I think the biggest surprise of all, is how well received these books are, not only from the young adult crowd, but also readers of all ages. That says something. It’s a huge stride forward in breaking the stigma of being hard of hearing and that’s a beautiful thing to be a part of.

Being able to share some of the poignant and difficult moments of my life, has been a worthwhile journey. It made me realize that I was meant to do this. I hope that my stories continue to inspire many others and encourage them to keep moving forward in life.

“Hope will always guide you.”

Breaking news...

May 25, 2016

I saw the news this morning and had to share it, Deaf model and actor, Nyle DiMarco won the Mirror Ball in Dancing with the Stars! He's the first Deaf person to win this competition and this is a supremely HUGE step forward for people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

I'm so freaking proud of this guy! With his extremely good looks, sweet charm and positive outlook on life, he has created an incredible opportunity for people like us by opening a lot of doors. He strongly believes in just being...

United

May 23, 2016

The world is changing and our generation is witnessing this incredible shift. There seems to be a greater sense of awareness as a whole everywhere you look, bringing communities together in the true spirit of friendship and family. Events in the last few weeks have proven that on many levels, from friendly competition and banter between countries (US/Canada/UK) due to the Invictus Games as well as the forest fires in Fort McMurray (Alberta, Canada) where over 80,000 people were suddenly evacu...

Finding HOPE

April 29, 2016

This week's theme is finding inspiration and hope. Today I saw a quote from Christopher Reeve that fit the bill perfectly. We live in a busy world and often we find ourselves feeling completely overwhelmed. Sometimes, that leads to neglecting time for ourselves, doing something kind to our heart and soul. We need to learn to set aside quiet moments of self reflection so that we can grow as a person, from the inside out.

It doesn't matter how you do it, whether it's going for a walk, meditatio...

Whee!

April 28, 2016

After Wentworth Miller, actor from Prison Break and Legends of Tomorrow, posted a deeply personal message about his struggles, it made me realize how important it was to be honest about it. He chose to move forward by sharing his thoughts and self care techniques through his social media which in turn is helping so many others. In my eyes, he's doing the right thing. He's showing us that there is no shame in being open about our daily struggles and talking about it.

Like him, that's one of th...

Open Mind

April 27, 2016

Most people know that I'm not afraid to speak my mind. I have no problems going up to someone and telling them that what they did was morally wrong. If they're behaving in an unprofessional or unethical manner, particularly towards someone with a hearing loss or general disability, I will put my foot down and tell them. Why? Because it's not right to ignore our needs or dismiss our problems. It's a part of our life and while we do our best to educate others on our daily struggles or lack of r...

Hooked on Glee

April 21, 2016

I had originally tried to watch Glee when it was first released several years ago and it didn't really blow my socks off despite what the critics and reviewers said. They kept raving about it and I failed to see why. At the time, my first impression was that it was rude, somewhat unpolished, and unethical. I did not appreciate the way people with disabilities were being portrayed. Yes, I realize that it was meant to reflect the good, bad and ugly aspects of high school, however, I found Coach...

No, I'm not talking about the Golden Years, I'm referring to the advancements in today's technology and awareness about disabilities that is simply groundbreaking. People like me with a hearing loss are living in the golden age of digital technology.

There has never been a greater time in our lives for having so much access to digital devices that help us, such as texting and emails. The ability to communicate with more people has opened a lot...

Beacon of HOPE

March 29, 2016

Living in the darkness is never easy, It's a constant struggle and a heavy weight on our shoulders. In a strange way, it's very much like being in a prison. It has been like this since I was very, very young. Just when I thought I had managed to escape from it, somehow, it finds a way back into my life when I least expect it. Lately, the burden seems heavier than usual.

I've been in the spotlight and public eye since I was a kid, primarily because of my hearing loss. I became a public speaker ...

Flash forward

February 27, 2016

I swear I'm not that obsessed with one of the hottest shows, The Flash, but I know talent when I see it. This is such an inspirational show that most people who watch it with me continue to follow the series, it's that good. I am impressed with the incredible cast that is featured in it, especially one of the main stars, Grant Gustin. To have such a young person carry the weight and responsibility of a major hit show is truly remarkable. Fans of Glee would have been quick to recognize him, he...
